Although the clients approached the renovation with an open mind, they had a clear goal: to transform both their bedroom and adjoining bathroom into a cohesive and elegant space. The brief centred on maximising storage, creating a strong focal point around the bed and introducing rich textures with a soft, layered grey palette throughout.
With full creative freedom handed to our Senior Designer and Supervisor, Suzanne, the bedroom design was approached with both style and practicality in mind. At the same time, the clients were looking to merge their existing bathroom and ensuite into one larger, more luxurious space - carrying through the same calming tones and refined finishes. Managed by our Senior Technical Designer and Supervisor, Ian, the project offered our team the opportunity to shape two connected spaces from the ground up, ensuring every element was cohesive.
One of the main design challenges of this project was working around the original door, which restricted flow between the bedroom, dressing area and ensuite. To overcome this, a traditional door was removed and replaced with sleek double pocket doors which were cleverly integrated within the plasterboard walls, allowing them to slide out of view and significantly improving the usability of the space.
As for the ensuite, the clients were looking to combine a bath, steam shower, basin arrangement and toilet within a newly formed room that also incorporated a dressing area, requiring careful planning to maximise space while keeping the room feeling calm and uncluttered. To bring in natural light, an inner window was created between rooms and a glass pocket door was installed within a newly constructed partition. This not only preserved valuable floor space but also contributed to the clean, modern feel carried throughout the project.
Suzanne and Ian worked closely with the client to ensure there was a cohesive flow between the master bedroom, dressing room and ensuite. The result was a carefully considered space that felt connected and calming, with each area complimenting the next through soft grey tones, tactile finishes and subtle detailing.
“This was a great example of what can be achieved when you're involved from the very beginning” explains Ian. “Having that early input meant we could shape the layout thoughtfully from day one - balancing the technical requirements of a steam room with the client’s aesthetic vision. It allowed us to plan the structure, lighting and flow of the space with real precision.”
The completed bedroom and ensuite delivered a beautiful and cohesive transformation. In the bedroom, the standout feature was the bespoke slat and mirror wall behind the bed, adding a sophisticated layer of depth and texture. Wall-mounted lighting freed up the bedside surfaces, while integrated phone chargers added a modern, practical touch.
Suzanne says, “The bedroom was a joy to work on. With the client giving me full creative freedom, I was able to layer in texture, warmth and thoughtful details that elevated the entire space. Seeing it come together with the slat and mirror wall as a focal point was incredibly rewarding.”
The adjoining ensuite was reconfigured to include a generous steam/shower room, freestanding bath and dedicated dressing area. Rich natural finishes - such as wood panelling, stone-effect tiles and black brassware - created a warm and contemporary feel. Feature lighting and recess detailing added the final layer of refinement, tying both spaces together in style and function.
“We’re absolutely thrilled with the transformation - every detail feels carefully considered, and the flow between the bedroom, dressing area and ensuite works perfectly. The Laings team made the entire process smooth, and the final result exceeded our expectations."
