Customer name: Michelle Birnie-McIntosh

Location: Insch

After successfully completing a major cottage renovation project, Michelle Birnie-McIntosh’s next challenge was adding three new bathrooms to the property.

Wishing to make each bathroom distinct with its own character, Michelle turned to Laings to enlist the help of designer Lee-Anne Aitken to reimagine her master en-suite, family bathroom and shower room.

The client brief

With a Pinterest board filled with inspiration and specific colour choices for each of the rooms, Michelle had a clear idea of the look and feel of her bathrooms. Each space needed to reflect the character of the home while delivering on functionality and style, whilst meeting a carefully considered budget.

The main focus for the project was to introduce three modern bathrooms to tie with the overall aesthetic of the home, following three different colour palettes. For the master en-suite and family bathroom, pops of colour were a must and for the shower room, a contrast with a monochrome style to give a sleek and modern look.

In the master en-suite, Michelle asked for the design to incorporate a steam shower alongside a much-loved pink freestanding bath. It was by far a blank canvas project, giving Lee-Anne lots to consider in approaching the design of the project.

Design considerations

The master en-suite needed to accommodate a bespoke steam shower while seamlessly integrating the client's statement pink bath. In the family bathroom, achieving a luxurious look within a lower budget called for careful product selection and creative tiling options. Meanwhile, the shower room had to strike a balance between looking impressive enough for visitors yet remaining durable and family-friendly.

Lee-Anne worked closely with Michelle to achieve the desired requirements, ensuring that the project remained on budget with no compromise on quality or style.

Design process

Collaboration was at the heart of the design process. Michelle brought her Pinterest boards to the table which helped Lee-Anne get a full picture of her aspirations for each space.

A series of meetings at the showroom followed, where the designs were brought to life in the 4D theatre and allowed Michelle to visualise every element and detail. These sessions gave the opportunity to refine layouts, materials and finishes to ensure every decision felt right.

The family bathroom, had an unexpected twist during the design process. The initial tiles had been finalised but during a meeting at the showroom, Michelle spotted a range of tile samples that she fell in love with. Staying true to our commitment to delivering a flexible and customer-centred service, the plans were swiftly updated to incorporate the new tile choice.

Final results

The completed bathrooms are nothing short of stunning, each with its own individual character and in-keeping with the flow of the home.

The master en-suite brought together contemporary with traditional elegance, with the stylish bespoke steam shower blending effortlessly with the rooms wall panelling and herringbone floor. The client’s pink freestanding bath acted as a focal point of the room and complemented by brass fittings, tones of sage and exposed brick work.

In the family bathroom, creative choices elevated the room, providing plenty of visual intrigue without exceeding the budget. Carefully selected fixtures and fittings helped leave an end product that felt fresh and full of personality.

The guest shower room embraced the desired monochrome theme with confidence. Black fittings create a striking contrast against white surfaces, achieving a modern feel that's both inviting and functional for everyday family life.
