The homeowners were in the midst of renovating their traditional granite property in a prestigious area of Aberdeen, transforming the bathrooms as part of the wider project alongside main contractor WMJ Aberdeen. At their initial consultation, they arrived with detailed house plans and a clear vision of what they hoped to achieve.
They met with Ian, Senior Technical Designer & Supervisor at Laings, for an in-depth chat to explore the possibilities and discuss how their ideas could be brought to life. The brief was to design a modern bathroom and ensuite, while maintaining a more traditional look within the cloakroom to reflect the character of the property.
With clear ideas in mind, the couple specifically requested features such as freestanding baths, wall-mounted sanitaryware and furniture, a wash toilet, and a traditional washstand in the cloakroom.
From the outset, the design was guided by a clear and concise brief established during the initial consultation; however, a key challenge of this project was working within the practical constraints of the existing spaces. Large windows influenced the overall layout, limiting where key elements such as baths, showers and furniture could be positioned, and requiring a considered approach.
As the project formed part of a wider home renovation, there was a defined timeline to work towards, requiring efficient coordination and timely decision-making at every stage in close collaboration with the team at WMJ Aberdeen. With several bespoke items carrying lead times of six to eight weeks, it was essential to finalise designs and place orders promptly. Through careful planning and coordination, all elements were delivered in line with the overall programme.
For the bathroom and ensuite, the design focused on clean lines and a modern, spa-like feel. Both spaces feature freestanding quarry cast baths, crafted from volcanic stone, paired with basins made from the same material. This continuity of materials helps to create a cohesive and luxurious flow throughout the rooms.
Wall-mounted basins and furniture were chosen to reinforce the modern aesthetic while also helping to maintain a sense of openness within the spaces.
In contrast, the cloakroom was designed to reflect a more classic style in keeping with the traditional granite home. Here, the clients opted for a washstand paired with white ceramic sanitaryware and gold brassware.
Several carefully considered elements help to elevate the overall design across the three rooms. Within the bathroom, the customers were particularly keen to use the same tiles across both the floor and walls to achieve a seamless, design-led finish. Freestanding quarry cast baths act as a focal point in both the bathroom and the ensuite. Pairing these with basins in the same finish and material creates a harmonious flow throughout the spaces, reinforcing the refined, high-end aesthetic.
Although the project was completed on a supply-only basis, the same level of detail and coordination was maintained throughout to ensure the customer’s brief was met and their expectations exceeded.
“It was a pleasure to work on this project in such a prestigious area of Aberdeen. Despite only meeting the clients once in person, we were able to translate their ideas into the designs, and I’m delighted that they’re so pleased with the final outcome.” - Ian, Senior Technical Designer & Supervisor
